Vintage 1956 photo of Ferrari 860 Monza S/N 0628M - Olivier Gendebien - Alfonso de Portago - Nurburgring 1000 KM.
This is a vintage 1956 photo of the Ecurie Francorchamps entered (other sources say it was a factory entry) Ferrari 860 Monza of Olivier Gendebien and Alfonso de Portago en route to a... disqualification due to "outer assistance received" during the 1956 Nurburgring 1000 KM race.
The car is seen here on the start-finish straight while it overtakes the # 21 Porsche 550 RS of Count Woflgang Berghe von Trips and Umberto Maglioli (chassis number 38).
After this race, the car would continue its life as a 290 MM. It was crashed in 1957 and converted to the pontoon style front end that it still sports today.
It now seems to reside in the USA.

This poster is part of the so-called "Major Illustrators" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1954 - 1963 and in which the cream of the crop of French motorsport illustrators such as Geo Ham, Jeudon and Beligond were hired for the design of the race posters.
The 1957 poster was after a color illustration from the hand of Jeudon. The change of illustrator from Geo Ham to Jeudon led to a radically different style. The more modern illustration retains one of the main symbols of the mythic care - the night. The cars have been reduced to blibs on a radar screen.
The race was won by Ron Flockhart and Ivor Bueb in their Jaguar D-Type (S/N XKD606) with a total of 327 laps to their name. In fact, the first 4 places went to Jaguar with their D-Types...
