Vintage 1921 Enzo Ferrari Targa Florio Alfa Romeo Advertisement

Vintage 1921 (!) Enzo Ferrari Targa Florio Alfa Romeo Advertisement.

This is an incredibly rare and VERY early Enzo Ferrari item!

Being born in 1898, Enzo took up an interest in cars at a very early age and after the death of both his father and his brother had to provide for himself and his widowed mother. After some mechanical jobs and having been declined a job at FIAT, due to lack of qualifications, he met Ugo Sivocci in 1919 who was a test driver at the Milanese car manufacturer CMN (Construzioni Meccaniche Nazionale) who were converting ex-WW1 militairy vehicles for civilian use but were planning to venture into more sporting cars.

Sivocci got Enzo a job at CMN as a test driver and it was here that Enzo ventured into his first automobile race, the Parma Poggio di Bercetta hillclimb on October 5th, 1919 where he came in 4th.

In 1920 Enzo would switch to Alfa Romeo and Sivocci followed suit and was hired to participate in the Alfa Corse team.

In 1921, still under the strict rule of Nicola Romeo, Alfa Romeo entered three cars in the grueling Targa Florio event.

The race was won by Giulio Masetti in his Fiat 451 but Giuseppe Campari brought his Alfa Romeo 40/60 home in third place. Sivocci and Enzo, both driving a modified "street" Alfa Romeo ES came home 4th and 5th overall.

With typical Italian flair, this vintage advertisement announces that Sivocci and Enzo came in first and second "overall for cars from Italian series production" (!) and Campari finishing "second overall in the Italian Racing Car class"(!) "Thus... Alfa-Romeo placed three cars amongst the top five".

Yes, Italian flair indeed...

This nicely designed ad, printed on blue paper, appeared in an Italian magazine in 1921.

A FANTASTIC period piece, that is exceptionally well suited for framing, from the early days of Enzo's career as a racing driver!

It measures approximately 28 x 17.5 cm or 11 x 6.9 inches.

Only 1 available.
